Doran-Lista Finishes Fifth at the Glen
WATKINS
GLEN, N.Y., June 20 - Jan Magnussen led a dozen laps in
Sunday's
Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International
in the Doran-Lista
DORAN JE4 Lexus #27 before he, co-driver Didier Theys
and the rest of the
Lebanon, Ohio-based team finished a solid fifth.
Magnussen,
of Roskilde, Denmark, started seventh but quickly moved
up to
fourth in the caution-filled race, which was slowed 10
times for 32 of the 164
laps run in the six-hour time period.
The
team battled an understeering condition for most of the
race but used the
numerous full-course cautions to make adjustments.
Magnussen
had a good battle with Oswaldo Negri in the Michael Shank
Racing
DORAN JE4 Lexus during the early portion of the race,
and at hour two the Shank
DORAN was fifth and the Doran-Lista DORAN was sixth.
When
several of the leaders pitted for fuel around laps 48-51,
Magnussen was
able to ease into second. Seconds later there was a full-course
caution when
The Racers Group Porsche #65 hit the wall in turn 11.
Magnussen was able to
make his stop for fuel and fresh Goodyears under that
full-course yellow on lap
53. Five laps later, on lap 58, three hours and 24 minutes
into the race, he
passed the CompUSA Riley Lexus in turn one for the lead.
At
that point Magnussen said the car's balance was good,
and he was able to
stretch his advantage to some 11.564 seconds just a few
laps later.
Magnussen
was still leading on lap 70 when he pitted for four tires,
fuel and
to be relieved by Theys, of Scottsdale, Ariz. Driver changes
take longer than
regular stops of course, and at the three-hour mark there
were three DORAN
JE4s running seventh, eighth and ninth, with Theys in
eighth place.
Theys
was able to battle back up to third before Magnussen got
back in the
car for the finish on lap 139 with about 40 minutes remaining.
The
team's third driver, Fredy Lienhard of Nierteufen, Switzerland,
ended up
not taking a turn behind the wheel during the race in
order for the team's two
professional race car drivers to try to move the effort
up the scoreboard.
The
team dropped back to seventh after its second driver change,
but
Magnussen moved back into sixth pretty quickly and then
got fifth just three laps from
the end from the Red Bull Fabcar Porsche #58, which was
battling a fuel
pick-up problem.
The
race was won by the CompUSA Riley Lexus of Max Papis and
Scott Pruett.
The
Doran-Lista entry was the top-finishing DORAN JE4 in the
field but two
others were also in the top 10. The Michael Shank Racing
DORAN JE4 Lexus was
eighth and the Bell Motorsports DORAN JE4 Pontiac was
ninth. The fourth one, the
Rx.com/G&W Motorsports DORAN JE4 BMW, was 24th.
Quotes
follow:
JAN
MAGNUSSEN (after his first stint): "At the beginning
the car was
understeering, which is the same problem we had here in
practice and qualifying.
With so many yellows the Doran-Lista crew was able to
make some changes to the
car and we did make some headway. Right now the car is
not great, but it's OK.
I was happy to get in the lead and I was able to pull
away.
"Right before I came in I was lapping a Porsche in
the turn after the Bus
Stop, and I saw that he was wiggling. I was on the outside
of him and I thought
he was going to hit me. I got in the grass to avoid him,
and I got grass in
the radiator and the water temperature went up high. The
team cleaned that
all out during the pit stop though and now the water temperature
is fine.
"Other
than that the only real problem I had was just normal
traffic. It was
a long session though; three hours for me."
JAN
MAGNUSSEN (after the race): "We made a step in the
wrong direction at the
end and made the car loose. But I had no problems in that
stint. When we
were leading the car was good at that point, but from
then until the end it [the
difference in the car] was 2 seconds."
DIDIER
THEYS: "I didn't have any problems during my stint.
We got back up
to third before I had to pit for fuel and to put Jan back
in for the finish.
We had some understeer at the beginning of my stint but
we made a tire pressure
change and it was good the rest of the way for me."
KEVIN
DORAN: "We just weren't fast enough here. We'll take
fifth and go on
to the next race."
