Borcheller
Hopes History Repeats Itself
And He'll be Victorious July 30
At Barber Motorsports Park
LEBANON, Ohio, July 21 - The people who operate
Barber Motorsports Park near
Birmingham, Ala. appreciate history. After
all, there's a 144,000-square-foot,
four-story motorsports museum on the grounds
of the 720-ace park.
Driver Terry Borcheller will always be a
part of the facility's history. He
and Forest Barber won the very first professional
auto race at Barber
Motorsports Park's 2.38-mile, 16-turn road
course in May 2003 in a DORAN JE4.
Now Borcheller, of Vero Beach, Fla., and
Harrison Brix of San Jose, Calif.
will try to duplicate those winning ways
in the Porsche 250 presented by Bradley
Arant Rolex Series race July 28-30. They'll
drive the Feeds the Need/Doran
Racing DORAN JE4 Ford No. 77, which carries
the colors of the Kodak EasyShare
System, Amp'd Mobile and SIRIUS.
The 250-mile race will be broadcast on SPEED
at 3 p.m. Eastern time July 30.
"Forest and I won the first race there, which
was a big win for us," recalled
Borcheller, who went on to the Daytona Prototype
driver championship that
year. "It was the first professional
race that they had there, and to win that
was very cool. I don't know that I've
ever had that experience before, so that
was very special.
"The DORAN has done well there," Borcheller
added. "We qualified outside pole
the year before last."
Borcheller and Ralf Kelleners qualified eighth
for this race last year and
finished fifth in the Bell Motorsports DORAN
JE4 Pontiac. Doran Racing's DORAN
JE4 Ford No. 77 of Matteo Bobbi and Fabrizio
Gollin qualified fourth and
finished tenth, while the Doran Labonte Racing
DORAN JE4 Pontiac No. 78 of Bobby
Labonte and Roberto Moreno qualified 16th
and finished 17th.
Borcheller and Christian Fittipaldi qualified
second for this event in 2004
but finished 22nd when Fittipaldi crashed
four laps from the end in rain while
running third. The Doran Racing DORAN
JE4 Lexus of Didier Theys and Andrea
Montermini qualified tenth and finished fifth
that year.
In addition to competing in Rolex Series
races at Barber Motorsports Park,
Borcheller said that he teaches "a handful" of
schools each year at the Porsche
Driving Experience sessions held at this
track. "Along with the Bondurant
School, it's one of the best schools in the
country," he said. "They do a really
great job."
When the green flag drops on the Porsche
250 on July 30 it'll mark the start
of a four-race, four-state, cross-country
push to close the Daytona Prototype
season in only 34 days. After the race
at Barber Motorsports Park on July 30
the circuit travels to Watkins Glen, N.Y.
for a DP-only race on Friday night,
Aug. 11 as part of that track's NASCAR NEXTEL
Cup weekend. Then it's off to
Sonoma, Calif. for a race at Infineon Raceway
on Saturday, Aug. 26 as part of
an Indy Racing League program. The
Rolex Series' season finale is slated for
a
new track, Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele,
Utah, on Saturday, Sept. 2,
with a nine-hour extravaganza.
There's a promoter's test day on Thursday,
July 27 at Barber Motorsports
Park, with practice starting the next morning.
Qualifying for the DP class is
Saturday, July 29 at 1:30 p.m. The
250-mile/109-lap/two-hour-and-45-minute race
starts at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 30.
