Theys Qualifies Tenth at Barber Motorsports Park
For Tomorrow's Porsche 250
BIRMINGHAM,
Ala., Oct. 9 - Didier Theys of Scottsdale, Ariz. was one
of 10
drivers to qualify under the existing track record Saturday
for the Daytona
Prototype class at Barber Motorsports Park. He'll start
tenth tomorrow in the
Porsche 250 Rolex series race in the Doran-Lista DORAN
JE4 Lexus #27, with Andrea
Montermini of Modena, Italy slated to drive in the second
half of the
two-hour-and-45-minute race.
Theys
took just 1:23.265 to travel over the 2.33-mile, 16-turn
road course
during the 15-minute qualifying session for the Daytona
Prototype class. In
miles per hour, that's an average of 99.442 mph.
The
old track record was a 1:24.313 (98.205 mph). Max Papis's
new record is
a 1:20.613 (102.713 mph).
Saturday
morning the Doran-Lista team was second overall in the
practice
session before qualifying. The team's fastest lap in that
session was a 1:22.151
(100.790 mph), second only to the eventual pole-winner's
1:22.081 (100.876
mph).
The
competition is so stiff that the scoreboard can change
dramatically from
session to session as well as during each session. Changing
weather
conditions amplifies that situation.
Rain
is predicted for tomorrow's race, which is scheduled to
be broadcast
live on SPEED at 1 p.m. Eastern time. Saturday's qualifying
session was held
under dry but humid and damp conditions.
"Our
car was loose in qualifying; we'll make some more adjustments
before the
race," Theys said. "The track was dry all the
way around."
The
other DORAN JE4s in the field will start second (Bell
Motorsports);
eighth (Michael Shank Racing) and 12th (G&W Motorsports).
Sunday's
race is being presented by Bradley Arant, a legal firm.
Both
Theys and Montermini will be making their first start
at this particular
track tomorrow.
