Broken Axle Thwarts Doran Racing's
Run Thursday Night at Daytona
DAYTONA
BEACH, Fla., June 29 - A rare broken axle
spoiled the chances of the
Feeds the Need/Doran Racing DORAN JE4 Ford
No. 77 in the Brumos Porsche 250
Rolex Series race Thursday night at Daytona
International Speedway.
At
one point Harrison Brix of San Jose, Calif.
was as high as third in the
car, which carries the colors of the Kodak
EasyShare System, Amp'd Mobile and
SIRIUS. At the end, however, he and co-driver
Terry Borcheller of Vero Beach,
Fla. ended up 25th in the Daytona Prototype
class and 40th overall in the 70-lap/250-mile
race on the 3.56-mile, 14-turn road course.
The
race was broadcast live on SPEED.
The
field was set by team points when communications
between race control and
course safety officials broke down right
as the second practice session was
to be held. The problem was fixed quickly,
but the decision was made to start
by points and change the qualifying session
into a shortened practice session
due to the day's packed schedule. That put
Brix in the 13th spot for the start.
He
ran in 14th, 15th and 16th at first. He
had a close call on lap 11 when
the No. 09 Pontiac of Doug Goad spun in
front of him in the chicane and lost
its nose. Brix had to get on the grass to
miss that one, but he kept on going
and by lap 30 he was 13th, trying to pass
Guy Smith in the Howard-Boss No. 16
and stay ahead of David Donohue in the Red
Bull/Brumos Porsche No. 58.
Around
that point some of the leaders started to
pit but Brix stayed out,
advancing to third on lap 35. He was in
fourth place and out of gas when he did
pit on lap 37 for fuel, tires and for Borcheller
to take over. The Doran
Racing pit crew did its usual speedy job
and quickly had Borcheller on his way.
Borcheller
advanced from 13th to 11th on lap 44, but
on lap 43 he radioed
that he had heard a strange sound and had
lost all the gears, and the entry
retired due to a broken axle with 45 laps
complete.
The
team will try again at the next Rolex Series
race July 30 at Barber
Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala.
The
Krohn Racing No. 76 of Colin Braun and Jorg
Bergmeister won.

Driver
quotes follow:
Terry
Borcheller: "I heard a whining noise
coming out of the horseshoe, and
then it let go in the next turn.
"It's
unfortunate. We could have had a good finish
because a lot of other
good cars had a problem tonight too."
Harrison
Brix: "My stint was all about accident
avoidance. The second wreck I
avoided was the closest. That was when the
09 Crawford and the 12 car got
together in the bus stop. That was a close
call.
"I
ran out of gas coming onto pit road.
"Hopefully
we'll have better luck next time."
